What is Number Porting?
Number porting is the process of transferring an existing mobile phone number from one carrier to Google Voice. This allows you to keep your current phone number while using Google Voice for calling, texting, and voicemail. (Google Help)
Why Port a Number to Google Voice?
Businesses and Virtual Assistants often port numbers to Google Voice to:
- Keep an existing business phone number.
- Manage calls and text messages from one platform.
- Continue using the same number without notifying customers of a change.
- Access Google Voice features such as voicemail transcription, call forwarding, and spam filtering. (Google Help)

Common Reasons Porting Fails

- Incorrect PIN or transfer PIN.
- Billing information does not match carrier records.
- The number is not eligible for Google Voice.
- The mobile service was canceled before the transfer was completed. (Google Help)
Best Practices for Virtual Assistants
- Verify all carrier information with the client before submitting the request.
- Never cancel the client’s existing mobile service until Google confirms that the port is complete.
- Double-check the billing name, address, account number, and PIN to avoid delays.
- Inform clients that calls and text messages may be temporarily interrupted during the transfer process.
- Test inbound and outbound calls after the port is complete to ensure the number is working properly. (Google Help)
